Waxing and polishing a fiberglass boat can be as simple as the technique used to make your sheet metal car or truck shine.  Fiberglass is different than sheet metal.  Metal expands with heat and contracts with cold, while fiberglass maintains a relatively constant temperature.  Fiberglass is porous and metal is impermeable.  These differences require using different chemicals to renew your boats gel coat.

I found a new product specifically designed for fiberglass called Mussel Wax.  WOW, what a difference in application and shine.  I applied this product, Mussel Wax, in 30 minutes to my entire boat.  I used a hand polish applicator, and then removed the liquid with a micro fiber cloth.  No mess or swirl marks.  The Mussel Wax cleaned the gel coat and left a beautiful and deep shine.  I could easily see the difference in shine after the Mussel wax was removed and that difference in shine guided my work around my boat.  This year I worked for 2 hours and thirty minutes creating a great shine on my gel coat. 

          The Mussel Wax has a different consistency than car wax and is applied over a 2 square foot area by using a dime sized drop applied in a circular motion covering the area. This product does not dry and is removed immediately with a cloth.  Mussel Wax can be applied in the sun.  The product requires cooling overnight and can be applied as many times as you prefer.  I am surprised how little of the wax is used. Not only does Mussel Wax not leave a white residue around trim, but it also shines the black rubber trim.
