Do individuals experiencing antipsychotic medication withdrawal have you confused about how to handle them?
Dopamine is the "reward" neurochemical. An excessive amount of it will make so that everything is stimulating, which can result in mania. This may be caused by Description: Description: https://encrypted-tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSg1_rxkmJ_MR6UDWGm6YvAKdwpdRg5alJDjAjh-bzRFMO06wx2neurotoxins that can poison the breakdown of dopamine, and therefore causing it's excess. Accumulation of toxins often is related to a genetic issue that relates to how that person clears toxins. A poor methylator, for instance, will not be able to clear certain heavy metals and they will accumulate in nerve and brain tissues. A poor diet which lacks essential nutrients like Niacin, Vitamin C, Zinc, B6, low blood sugar, preservatives and other food issues can result in psychosis in sensitive individuals. Antipsychotic medications are targeted to restrict dopamine and then the person is left without enjoying life's rewards.
When a person comes off antipsychotic medications, more dopamine is allowed to be released and is now impacting an excessive number of dopamine receptors. They may add to that drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and eating sugar as those were the things they may have been doing for stimulation while on the drug. This can result in extreme psychotic symptoms and another hospitalization. They are usually then told that they need to be on the drug for life. This is all very discouraging.
To successfully withdrawal from these medications we use the following methods. First, we lab test for Description: Description: https://encrypted-tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSUZwW0gXbstH5M0NHyHdnyAxVUUVwBZ6eeX0_Igi6zdiazKxkGwhat may have caused the original issues. Often, we find toxicity to be the culprit. Whether the toxicity is the result of environmental factors or genetics, we work to clear the person out. We restrict sugar, caffeine and processed foods and use supplements that are known to be beneficial in these persons and supplements that will support the inhibitory or calming aspects of the neurochemistry.
The Alternative to Meds Center is a residential behavioral health program aimed at stabilizing a person's neurochemistry with natural substances, detoxification from accumulated environmental neurotoxins, IV amino acid therapy and other targeted nutritional therapy, peer support, massage, yoga, one-on-one therapeutic counseling and life coaching, personal exercise training and other holistic therapies that effectively address the anticipated withdrawal symptoms.
