Seven Types of Classified Ads We Do Not Like to See

We have a very low tolerance for spam or scams. We ban on sight. We get some complaints about that policy but this is a private site and we reserve the right to reject anyone who doesn’t comply with our Terms of Use.

As a rule of thumb, post classified ads that match the related category. An ad for speakers obviously does not belong in autos. We consider this type of posting spam.

7 other classified ads (types) we do not like to see.

1. Loan Ads – 99% of these ads are scams and originate outside of USA.
2. Nudity Ads – That’s a different venue (not us—it is those other guys)
3. Get Rich Quick Ads – 99% of these ads are BS. Nothing in life is easy; earning legitimate money is no different. The only one benefiting is the promoter or at least until the FBI or some other law enforcement agency knocks on their door.
4.  Pharmacy Pill Ads – Personally, we wouldn’t buy pills from a free classified ad. Most of these ads originate from non-US countries. Visit your local pharmacy or visit a well-known online pharmacy.
5. Pyramid/Ponzi Scheme Ads – We delete/ban these ads on sight. They are ALL scams. You may get yourself into a lot of legal trouble if you get caught participating. If you see them, please report them to us soonest.
6. Puppy Ads – These can be legitimate but only deal in person (local). Do your homework and check out the seller. 99-100% of the overseas puppies ads are scams–don’t get involved!
7.  Gold Dust Ads - All of these ads from Africa are fake. These guys are low-life scammers.

COMPETING CLASSIFIED ADS WEBSITE ETIQUETTE

Frankly speaking, I do not mind if other classified ads websites post their services to FreeAdLists.com. But I have noticed an annoying trend lately and it is happening routinely: I have seen this particular ad posted dozens of times. Not cool. I will ban the URL permanently if the activity does not cease.

JOE THE PLUMBER FOR PRESIDENT

After Wednesday’s final presidential debate between Senators Obama and McCain, I guess a few people decided to capitalize on the “Joe the Plumber” comment. I think I heard it 20+ times during the debate.

Well anyways, I was perusing some the new classified ads on FreeAdLists.com and found this bumper sticker advertisement for “Joe the Plumber for President.” I thought it was a good chuckle.

Here is the classified ad: Joe the Plumber for President Bumper Stickers

By the way, here is a joke by Senator McCain regarding Joe the Plumber during a comedy speech. It is a pretty funny clip, especially at the 30 second mark.

ANNOYED WEBSITE CLASSIFIED ADS OPERATOR QUERIES OTHERS

I received this email a few weeks ago from an annoyed webmaster. I emailed a few suggestions but I never received a response. At any rate, I hope the suggestions helped.

Annoyed Webmaster said…

“I have been contacting webmasters of classified sites (I run one as well) regarding how they deal with 419 scams. We started blocking IP addresses at server level and wondered what things you may be doing to better serve your users. I am thinking of creating a list of IPs to share and compare with others. All the best!”

I wonder what other website classified operators were doing to deal with low-life scammers and spammers. I think some of the large classified ads operators might be banning IPs, too.

HOW MANY FREE ADS CAN I POST TO YOUR SITE IN ONE DAY?

Here is a great question from one of our posters via email. It is about posting multiple/duplicate classified ads. The policy about the aforementioned is also listed in FreeAdLists’ Terms of Use . But does anyone ever bother reading those texts? I seriously doubt it, so here is a pithy response to that question.

The Question:

I posted around 12-14 ads on your site this morning. I go to manage my ads and only 7 or so show up! How many ads can I post to your site in one day? Is there a limit? Please let me know. Thanks, FreeAdLists_Poster

FreeAdLists_Poster,

We are very strict with regards to duplicate ads and ads that have the same link in them time and time again. If you have different ads then you can post as many as you would like. If we feel that someone is bogging down the web site with twenty versions of the same ad or link, then they will be deleted, per our discretion.

Respectfully,

Debra

Here are my top twenty-five classified ads websites. The last time I did a survey was in Mar 2008. It appears the traffic for some of the sites have increased substantially. Of course, craigslist still leads the list by a phenomenal margin. Speaking of phenomenal margin, did anyone watch Game 6 of Celtics vs Lakers? 131-92 – Ouch!

HOW CAN I GET A NATIONWIDE AD LISTING FOR THE US AND CANADA?

Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2008 05:22:34 -0700 (PDT)
From: “roy___AT___freeadlists.com”
Subject: Re: listing
To: Some_FreeAdLists_Poster___AT__yahoo.com

Some_FreeAdLists_Poster,

We used to offer Feature Ads/All Cities options but the spammers were killing the service. They would list their ad and then try to charge someone else’s paypal account. We got sick and tired of dealing with these low-life scum and the costly chargebacks associated with their “transactions,” so we disabled the options.

But we could do this on a case by case basis. We do have people (like you) who contact us personally and truly want to set something up.

“Featured Ads” option is $3 (will show up first in the category/and featured in the slow moving marquee) and “All Cities” is $3 (will show up for every city within a given state). And then there are static ads. They are listed in the “Classified Ads” (homepage) section and they run $5 for two weeks.

By the way, FreeAdLists.com is not interested in ads that are illegal, sexist, pornographic, gambling, home typing scams, mp3/movie downloads, pharmacy or racist in content.

Regards,

Roy

I WANT TO BUY YOUR DOMAIN NAME – NOT!

The 419 scammers are employing yet another method to bilk you out of your hard earned cash. As you can see below, they claim to be interested in buying your domain and they have cash today. Yeah, right. The only cash they will have is yours, if you let them. I have received several of these so-call “buy your domain offers” the past two days.

Notice they are asking potential sellers/victims for phone numbers. Do not give out your phone number unless you want to be taken. Frankly speaking, that should be common sense for most of us.

They have spoofed a legitimate/professional looking email address to get your attention. But as you will quickly find out, the reply email is a cryptic Gmail email address. That is a surefire mark of a scam.

Below is a quick search of the email address on Google.com: Purchase Domain 419 Scam
